Smoothies are a great way to start your day off in a healthy way. They’re easy to make (all you need is a blender), super portable and packed with nutrients. Yes, you can find super decadent smoothie recipes, but I recommend saving those for dessert. In the a.m., stick with these healthier smoothie recipes that I’ve rounded up for you.

What Makes the Perfect Breakfast Smoothie?

To start, the perfect breakfast smoothie is delicious. Raise your hand if you’ve ever had a smoothie in the morning that is super gritty from protein powder, too sweet or not sweet enough. Not a cool way to start off the day.

Great smoothies (IMHO), contain the following:

Fruit and Veggies

Every recipe I’m posting here contains fruit, and most also contain leafy greens. Fruits add sweetness (necessary!), but they, along with veggies, provide a myriad of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber that you just can’t fake.

Protein

Protein is a super important piece of a breakfast smoothie. Want to fill up and stay full straight through until lunch time? Make sure to add some protein to your recipe. I especially love Greek yogurt because not only does it give your protein and probiotics, it gives smoothies a great texture.

Non-Dairy Liquid

All smoothies need liquid to blend and combine. My favorite liquid to use is unsweetened almond milk, but I also frequently use coconut water if I’m making a smoothie with tropical ingredients. Other great options: oat milk, hemp milk, soy milk or plain water. *Note that I don’t use dairy milk because my body doesn’t respond well to it. If you drink milk and your body digests it well, go for it! That’s an additional source of protein.

Healthy Smoothie Recipes

Blueberry Pear Smoothie

The combination of blueberries and pears is so decadent and bright. I love that this recipe from Natascha’s Kitchen uses Greek yogurt – it gives this smoothie a great, hearty texture and adds a kick of natural protein.

Tropical Kale Smoothie

Not to boast, but this recipe that I posted in 2018 is still one of my all time favorites! The tropical fruits completely mask the taste of greens in the smoothie, but the color makes it obvious that they’re there.]

Thin Mint Smoothie

When we lived in Hawaii we frequented an amazing restaurant called Ai Love Nalo. They made a Thin Mint smoothie there that I’ve been trying to replicate since. I can’t replicate the Hawaiian vibe, but this gets pretty close taste-wise.

Strawberry Kiwi Layered Breakfast Smoothie

The first thing to catch my eye with this recipe from Bless This Mess was how pretty the layered look of the smoothie was. It’s a bit more labor intensive but I think worth it!

Banana Berry Smoothie

Anyone else obsessed with Cooking Light? I know it’s not just me. This recipe calls for a scoop of almond butter, which makes for a super satiating breakfast smoothie.

Peaches and Cream Breakfast Smoothie

How divine does that sound? This recipe from Will Cook for Smiles is SO delicious. The smell alone is worth waking up for.

Healthy Smoothie Ingredient Tips

My recommendation when grocery shopping for smoothie ingredients: buy high-quality ingredients, always. These recipes contain just a few ingredients each, so you want to use fruit and vegetables that are ripe and flavorful.

Buy organic when possible. Is it more expensive? Yes, probably. But this is the first meal that you are going to put into your hungry body. You want it to be as healthy and nourishing as possible.

When it comes to nut butter, a little goes a long way! Don’t go overboard adding nut butter. It’s calorie-dense and the flavor can easily overpower more delicate flavors like banana.

Frozen or Fresh?

When it comes to smoothies, I like to use fresh fruits ONLY when they are in season! Don’t be scared to buy frozen fruits. Frozen produce is picked and frozen at the peak of ripeness, which means the fruit is full of flavor and nutrients. Again, buy organic when possible.
